A Japanese diner serving Osaka-style ‘Dad’s home cooking’ – possibly superior to its British equivalent – and a third branch of Middle Eastern vegetarian restaurant Bubala are the latest arrivals at the Coal Drops Yard development behind King’s Cross station.
Oton, the Japanese option, has opened from the team behind Okan in the former County Hall on the South Bank – founder Moto Priestman and food director Takuma Shoji, who both hail from Osaka (Oton and Okan are casual terms for ‘dad’ and ‘mum’ in Japanese).
They say, “Here we cook the way Dad would—simple, comforting, and full of love, warm bowls, grilled fish, and the kind of food that brings you home, no matter where you are.”
Bubala, which opens next week in nearby Cadence Court, follows branches in Shoreditch and Soho which have established the Middle Eastern-inspired outfit from Marc Summers as one of London’s best vegetarian options that, according to the latest Harden’s guide, “really seems to tap into what modern dining and modern food is all about“.
