Matt Gillan accepts defeat at Heritage

Chef Matt Gillan has confirmed the closure of Heritage, his crowd-funded restaurant-with-rooms in the West Sussex village of Slaugham – and apologised for his “radio silence” in recent months.

Acknowledging that suppliers and customers with outstanding vouchers had been unable to contact him, he said “I intend on making this right, however best I can.” He had “tried to navigate our situation as best I could“, he said, but this had not been possible.

“The story of Heritage has been an amazing journey for me, and one I am truly proud of. I just wish it could have ended on a more positive note. There have been an enormous number of loyal followers along this road and I know I have let many people down over the last few months.

Suppliers and voucher-holders should contact him at a new email address – heritage.slaugham@gmail.com – for information about his plans to offer a solution.

A former head chef of The Pass at the nearby South Lodge hotel, Matt opened Heritage with five boutique bedrooms in 2019 after raising £90,000 in a crowdfunder. It earned consistently high ratings in the Harden’s guide for its “brilliant tasting menus” in a “dream location”.

Last summer, however, the venue ceased operating as a standard restaurant and switched to offering experiences such as group events, supper clubs, high-end garden dining, weekend retreats or a silent disco with snacks.
